  • negative reinforcement:

After the behavior staff sends erica to her room and clean the mess erica made

positive reinforcement: when staff have no time to talk erica, she creates a mess to get staff to talk to her

HYPOTHESIS

  • Physical health, Mental health, Sensory impairments, Lack of skills, Physical Environment, Schedules of Activity/Routine, Amount of Control this Person has over his/her Daily Life, Other people.

INTERVENTIONS

Develop Interventions for any factors which you have identified in the previous sections.

H. Setting Events:

1. Physical Health

Erica can be prescribed medication for irregular joint pain such as topical creams and oral substances from her doctor.

2 Mental Health

-a psycho-educational assessment

-assessment for depression and social anxiety. If symptoms are present I would formulate a treatment plan for my client accordingly.

3. Sensory Impairments

Since Erica is sensitive to bright lights, I would recommend supplying Erica with glasses or glasses/goggles when around the group home or in bright light areas. I would also suggest changing the light bulbs or adding dimmable light switches.

4. Lack of Skills

Erica’s social skills and communication skills are limited, Erica should start having workshops or work closely with social workers to increase these skills.

5. Physical Environments

the bright lights can be replaced or dimmed with switches.  glasses can be provided for Erica to cope with the brightness in bright environments.

heavy chair and heavy/bolted tables so Erica cannot flip or throw. gloves can be introduced if Erica still exhibits the wall punching behaviors as we dont want her to break her hands.

Erica can be placed in a home that is not a group home setting.

6. Eating/Sleeping Patterns

N/A

7. Schedules of Activities/Routines

Erica will be provided daily activities in her free time that she enjoys, because it will keep her busy and could boost her quality of life .

8. Other People

Erica can be moved into a different setting from the group home environment.

9. Amount of Control this Person has over his/her Daily Life

erica has a lot of free time after daily activities, she has moderate control over her daily life

10.  Motivating Operations

talk-time and weekend activities should not be ignored

I. Antecedents (Triggers):

  • Bright lights

  • When staff refuse “talk time”

  • When Erica is asked to clean up

J. Consequences:

Choose and label the consequences you will use. (positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, positive punishment, negative punishment). Note you don’t have use all the consequences listed.

negative punishment: erica will not be sent to her room after a mess is created and will have to clean when done screaming or has calmed down.

Positive punishment: the bright lights have been changed and heavy chairs and tables have been added to the environment

positive reinforcement: praise erica for good behavior and using the glasses

  1. Complete the Behaviour Plan for Erica. (5 marks)

BEHAVIOUR PLAN

Name of Client: Erica

Date: August 12, 2022

Of all the strategies which you have listed on the Functional Assessment and Intervention Form, choose the 5 which you would prioritize to work on first.  Priorities for strategies should be in this order:

A. Health

B. Safety

C. Significant influence over the behaviour

D. Quality of life for the individual

List each of these strategies and for each one explain why it is a priority.

Strategy 1: Assess for medical issues related to joint pain by taking erica to the doctors office to be prescribed medication, or if need to be taken of the medication Risperidone because a less common side effect of the medication is joint pain

Strategy 2: Heavy chairs & bolted tables, so that Erica cannot pick them up and throw them.

Strategy 3: Avoid sensory overload, Dim the lights in the rooms or give Erica sensitivity glasses to help her cope with bright lighting.

Strategy 4: A social worker should be appointed to Erica to encourage her communication and support in forming relationships.

Strategy 5: exercise eases symptoms of depression and anxiety. Erica should be doing moderate physical activity daily for 30 min such as walks, runs, or sport games with other group home members.

Complete the table below for each strategy:

Steps Needed to Complete the Strategy

Who

When

take erica to the doctors talk about concerns of irregular joint pain, depression and anxiety

1-2 staff members

Erica

on the weekend after her activity

  • The agency could swap the chairs out for something heavier, like couches or even beanbags, to prevent anyone from being injured by Erica's flying chairs.

Staff

As soon as possible

  • Staff should be accommodating when Erica starts to complain about bright lighting. Erica could be moved to a room with low lighting, or staff could give her sensitivity glasses that block the wavelengths that have been shown to cause pain. This would prevent her from being affected by the bright lights.

Staff

as soon as possible

  • In order to encourage Erica to communicate more, build relationships with residents and other people, and relieve her anxiety, the group should suggest that she work with a social worker.

Staff

Daily

daily exercise activity should be introduced to Erica and group home members in their free time. i.e walking, biking, group sports/games
